You were right yesterday;
You rang the doorbell
Not long after I'd started to feel
Hungry for lunch.
I opened the door
To receive an immediate hug,
Which I returned with a smile.
Seeing your face
Across a screen was a treat,
But if Skype is Halloween candy,
Having you beside me
Face-to-face is chocolate mousse.
(My mom tells me that it's decadent.)

We spent the afternoon
Catching up on what can't be done
Over video chat,
Until it was time to get ready and leave.
Unlike our first Halloween together,
What felt like so many more years ago
Than just two,
You brought over your own makeup
And dangerous-looking hair equipment.
I know it was a curling iron,
But those are dangerous,
Aren't they?

You took my breath away
Even more than before
As you descended the staircase
And gave me a smile
So much more confident
Than the one you gave me
In the same scenario
Two years ago.
Thinking back on that time
Made me almost sentimental
As I saw how much you've grown.

You've even gained an inch
In your height.
