I teleport to school on the first day back, but I make sure to arrive far enough away so that no one will see me. It's easy in the winter since it's so dark and cold outside that everyone is concerned with getting inside quickly. Nothing happens that's not normal until lunch when Chy is late coming to the table.
"She's here," Dimmy says as he looks around the cafeteria for his younger sister. "Dunno where."
A tray slams down on the table, followed by the sound of a metal chair scraping across the floor. I look to my right to see Chy, but there's another girl standing behind her. The girl looks about as average as you can get, with blonde hair and blue eyes a much more natural shade than mine, slightly expensive-looking clothes, glasses, and most notable of all, no magic energy radiating from her at all. In fact, there's not even the normal human energy radiating from her. "Guys," Chy says after introducing all of us to the girl, "this is Anna."
Anna continues to stare at all of us, so Dimmy takes her silence as an opportunity to be annoying. That causes Mimi to get annoyed, and the two of them argue for a little bit. I take the chance while Anna's not gawking at me to get another look at her. Her cheeks are redder than they were when she was still standing, and I guess she could be called cute, but that doesn't mean anything. Mimi is cuter, but that doesn't mean I like her. Other than the fact that Anna is definitely not a normal human, she's the most average of us all. I spend the rest of lunch going over in my mind what she could be to make her look normal but not radiate any energy. I can tell Chy notices it too.
When lunch is over, Anna follows Chy out of the cafeteria and probably to her next class. Mimi and I have the next period together, so she catches up to me. "What do you think of her?" she asks. "You didn't say anything."
"I don't know," I reply. "There's not much to her."
"Well I like her boots." Mimi continues on to talk about girl stuff, so I tune out.
Anna turns up in my history class, and she ends up sitting behind me. I swear I can feel her staring, but I think nothing of it. It's probably the blue hair. It's usually always that.
I flash my gym uniform on next period so that I don't have to waste my time changing. But when I walk into my gym, who's standing there but Anna. She's off to the side, holding one of her arms and watching everyone else. I already know none of the others have this class, so Anna's off by herself.
We start playing dodge ball, and some idiot decides boys vs girls is a good idea. Anna gets pelted in the face by the crackhead named Cameron who sits outside to smoke cigarettes or pot or something while everyone else eats lunch. She stands on the sidelines and rubs smudges out of her glasses. Her shirt pulls up just enough for me to be able to see a curvy hip. The uniform doesn't do her figure justice. I feel bad for not even saying hello to her, but it's a little too late for that.
After class, as she's walking out to get on her bus, one of the cheerleaders roughly bumps into her, making her drop her phone. Without thinking, I pick it up for her while she looks for who bumped into her. The screen is badly cracked, so I brush my thumb over it, fixing it for her before she can see. "Is this yours?" I ask to get her attention.
She turns to look at me with wide eyes. "Yeah. Thanks..." Her face turns red as she takes her phone back.
I nod, then see the time. "You better go catch your bus."
She glances at the clock down the hall, and I disappear into the crowd before she can look back.
"Smooth," says a voice from behind me. I turn to see BJ standing there with his arms folded across his chest. "Anyway, Chy wants us all over at her place now."
I'm guessing its about Anna. I stand off to the side and teleport the two of us to Chy's house. "Blumiere," Mimi says when she sees me, "I saw you with her after school. What was that about?"
"Nothing," I reply blankly. "She dropped her phone, so I picked it up for her."
"Liar," BJ states quickly. "The screen was totaled. Blumiere fixed it for her."
"What were you doing, BJ, stalking them?" Lemmy asks, but she's widely ignored.
"Did she see you?" Chy asks more loudly than Lemmy.
"No, she didn't see me fix it. No one did," I answer.
Plasma, Chy's talking pet electric rat, jumps up onto her shoulder and says, "Someone else could've seen. BJ saw, so it's possible. Now who's this new girl?"
"Just some normal human," BJ says dryly.
"No she isn't," I say. "There's no human energy radiating from her."
"I agree, but you sound like you're defending her," Chy points out.
"I'm not."
"Oooh, you liiike heeer!" Mimi laughs.
I sigh, neither confirming nor denying. I just met the girl, for Grambi's sake. "What are we going to do about Anna?" I ask.
"I say we let her fend for herself in high school," BJ says. "She's cute enough to survive."
"BJ!" Chy and Lemmy scold at the same time.
"I say we keep her around!" Mimi pipes up. "She's cool. We can just watch her for a while and see if we can trust her."
Everyone thinks about that for a second, then almost unanimously agree on that. BJ doesn't want to. "Chy, what if Anna's just-"
"BJ, give her a chance. She seems to get along with me, and I'm sure Mimi will suck her in eventually." That sparks a grin from Mimi, and Chy ultimately decides on essentially spying on Anna until we can trust her. I don't argue.

First Flight
How frightening that first flight must have been,
hearts racing into the unknown,
and I should wonder how those men felt
at the first takeoff into the air,
gusts of wind beneath fragile wings,
if not for loving you.

Untold Stories- The Unsinkable Ship: Prologue
-6:43 AM, April 10th, 1912- Southampton, England
Nicholas Thatcher woke up extra early today. He gasped, waking up immediately. He sat up in his hotel bed, looking at the clock. Smiling, he got out of bed, careful not to wake Sofia (his sister) who was sleeping next to him. He went bare foot on the wooden floor, past the bed his mom and Amber (his other sister, twin of Sofia) were sleeping in. The 11 year old kneeled in the wooden chair that was pushed up to the high window so he could look out.
Their hotel in Southampton overlooked the White Star Line's Pier. Nick could see it from their floor of the hotel, just barely. In that ocean dock

this afternoon
unresponsive to the sunlight
lying in bed like summer afternoons and white sheets
still moments in our room
so quiet i can hear your ribcage shifting with each breath
but winter -
winter is coming,
the air is so cold,
my bones break inside.
your remove yourself from me,
turn your head away,
hand slipping out of mine,
curling into yourself.
this morning
waking up to brightness outside
the crisp air is singing with potential but
i am quiet
i am inside
i am by myself on this big bed.
